Business mileage calculator

What you can claim for business driving at HMRC's approved rates — 45p a mile, dropping to 25p after 10,000 miles.

2 min read

HMRC approved rate (cars): 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, 25p per mile after that.

How to use it

Enter your business miles for the year. The calculator applies HMRC's approved mileage allowance payment rates — 45p for the first 10,000 miles and 25p for every mile beyond — to show what you can claim tax-free.

These rates cover fuel and running costs, so if your company pays you less than the approved amount you can claim tax relief on the shortfall. Keep a simple log of journeys, dates and purpose to back it up.

Frequently asked questions

Do the rates change over 10,000 miles?

Yes — the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year are at 45p per mile, then it drops to 25p. The calculator handles the split automatically. Motorcycles and bicycles have their own rates.

Can I claim if the company pays for fuel?

If the company reimburses your business mileage at up to the approved rates, that's tax-free and there's nothing more to claim. If it pays less, you can claim relief on the difference; if it pays more, the excess is taxable.
